厳島神社の概要
島そのものが神と崇められる厳島（宮島）は日本三景のひとつ「安芸の宮島」として有名です。厳島神社は平安時代の寝殿造りの粋を極めた建築美で知られる日本屈指の名社です。
海上に立つ高さ16mの朱塗りの大鳥居は日本三大鳥居のひとつです。

厳島神社
境内の沖合約200mに浮かぶ朱の大鳥居と社殿で知られる厳島神社は、平安時代に平清盛が厚く庇護したことで大きく発展しました。高さ約16mの鳥居は、木造としては国内最大規模の大きさです。 奈良の春日大社・敦賀の気比神宮の大鳥居とともに「日本三大鳥居」に数えられています。
弥山（みせん）原始林
島の最高峰・弥山（535メートル）山頂から望む瀬戸内海の多島美は人気があり、 毎年元旦には初日の出を目指す人で混み合います。この地を愛した伊藤博文は「厳島の真価は弥山からの眺望に有り」と絶賛しています。

厳島神社の歴史
推古天皇元年（593年）に有力豪族が社殿造営の神託を受け、社殿を創建したのに始まるとされ、 仁安3年（1168年）頃、平清盛が社殿を造営し、江戸時代には厳島詣が民衆のブームとなりました。厳島中央の弥山（標高535m）山頂には巨石が連なっており、山岳信仰の対象であったとされています。
